Introduction to Black and White Photography
February 20. 2011-March 27, 2011 Sundays 2-6PM
$250 for six weeks, includes usage of darkroom for duration of class. Only chemical charges apply.
Objective: students will learn the basics of exposure, film development, black and white printing and print presentation.
Location: PhotoSource 6346 Elvas Ave. Sacramento, CA 95819
Materials: a camera with manual options; black and white film (Ilford HP, please); black and white paper (RC, not Fiber); plastic negative sleeves (ex: Print File). All materials will be discussed during the first class and can be purchased that night at PhotoSource.
Syllabus
2/20 Exposure: f-stops, shutter speeds, depth of field, and metering.
2/27 Film Development. Bring one or two exposed rolls to class.
3/6 Make Contact Sheets. Learn the basics for creating a black and white print. Bring negatives and B&W paper.
3/13 Print. Making enlargements: dodging, burning, cropping, and contrast control. Bring negatives and B&W paper.
3/20 Print. More practice. Bring negatives and B&W paper.
3/27 Mounting and Presentation: trimming, centering, and the dry press. Bring finished prints and two sheets of 14×18 rag board.
